has given me. >> how do you feel now? >> feel good. feel good. >> what are you going to do, first thing? >> i'll go home and see my wife. >> i know she's waiting for him. cnn's athena jones is covering the story in washington for us. athena, good morning to you, why was newman in north korea to start with? and give us details about why they decided to release him now. >> good morning, victor. it is great news. great to see that video of him happy and smiling. mirel newman as you mentioned fought in the korean war and wanted to go back and visit the peninsula. he went with a tour group. he was taken off the 14 leave pyongyang at the end of that trip, he was taken off the plane, end of october, so he's been there for a long time. the north koreans say they're releasing him for humanitarian

reasons after what they call an apology from newman, detailing various indedepressions. >> and they're waiting for another american to come home, kenneth bayh. what's the status of his release? >> bayh was arrested in november of last year and sentenced in may to 15 years of hard labor. we actually heard from newman's son jeff who talked about bay. >> we also ask that you forget another american, kenneth bayh who is still being held in the b "r." r and we hope that he, soon will be able to be with his family soon.

>> we know that former new mexico governor bill richardson is hoping to work to get him out. thank you, athena. the official start of winter is two weeks ago, try telling that to people in south central united states. >> this feels like the center. ice storms has knocked out power for hundreds of thousands of people. stunned just about everybody with this bone chilling temperatures. here's meteorologist jennifer grey. >> i started sliding sideways, i got close to the house and said i better stop and get a wrecker out here. >> straighten your wheels up. >> reporter: it's a deadly storm stretching across the middle of the nation and it's moving east. but for millions of people, conditions are already dangerous. highways turned into skating rinks with tires spinning. and some drivers losing control. the region is littered with accidents. >> the ice, people's cars aren't

really suited for. they don't have tires that can handle it. so everyone's slipping around and it becomes a mess on the roads. >> reporter: in oklahoma, this truck slid off an icy bridge and into a lake. in illinois cars slide off the highways and into the center of roads and median. big cities also caught in the storm. dallas is nearly shut down this morning. at 26 degrees, it was colder there friday than in anchorage, alaska, causing the city to cancel its weekend downtown holiday parade and annual marathon. the freakish weather also causing the cancellation of more than 1 to flights in and out of dallas-ft. worth airports. in memphis, tennessee, rain turning to ice on roads. >> hopefully, it's over. >> reporter: it's not over yet, snow and sleet expected to hit

the east coast sunday. the national weather service says this massive air mass is dropping temps 30 degrees below normal. >> we'll get there eventually. >> what about your family? are you guys waiting for her? >> we are. praying for their safety. >> and even though it's not ice and snow and all of that across much of the south, temperatures are going to stay below freezing for the next couple of days. so what's on the ground will likely stay there for at least tomorrow, maybe even tuesday for some locations. so still a mess. here's the system now completely pushing off the east. we are going to don't see rain in the northeast. but here is the next system, and it's going to continue to push to the north and east over the next 24 hours. today, we'll get a little breather, a break. but then by tomorrow, we're going to have more ice and snow spill into the mid-atlantic into the northeast. we're forecasting possibly half

an inch of ice accumulation in locations like charleston, louisville, all the way to pittsburgh. even washington, d.c. included in this. guys. >> this weird, wacky weather we were just saying so warm in new york yesterday. but then freezing last week. more importantly, jennifer grey, welcome to cnn, welcome to "new day" weekend. thank you for being with us. we're going to talk about you, where you're from. >> your favorite colors. >> we'll dig into it all so viewers learn more about you. >> thank you, looking forward to it. let's talk about something else upbeat. >> good economy. >> a better economy. a lot of people say they don't feel it. a better than expected jobs report pushed the dow nearly 200 points higher on friday. >> you know why 203,000 jobs were added to payrolls in november. way better than expected. the jobless rate, that ticked significantly lower to 7%. that is the lowest it's been in

five years. we have more on how it's affecting wall street. good morning, zain. >> well, poppy and victor, it was a big week for the economy. car sales rose, new home sales soared and friday, unemployment rate druopped to 7%. that's the lowest since 2008. earlier this year, unemployment declined a lot of people got discouraged and weren't counted. the economy has added more than 2 million jobs this year, the best since 2005 and the gains not just in low-rate sectors. a lot in education and health care, professional services like accountants and travel agents. and hiring in manufacturing is strongest since last year. wages are up and americans are working less hours. the list goes on. the report pushed the dow up 200 points friday.

the federal reserve will release its findings soon. rememberer we still haven't gained back all the jobs we lost during the recession. 1 million to go. poppy and victor, still work to be done. >> zain, thank you very much. i want to put this in perspective, despite a week of very good news about the economy, a lot of you are not feeling the recovery. there's a recent cnn/orc poll, it highlights how things are going. 59%. almost 6 in 10 americans said badly, just 41% said they feel things are going well. and that has a lot to do with the fact all the jobs coming back, a lot of them of not high paying jobs. >> this week, south africa is paying tribute to nelson mandela, ten days of mourning are under way for the man many called madiba. but the nation is also celebrating this life. we'll do that next. south africa in soweto. they've announced a date -- has he announced a date for the funeral? i know there's ten days of grieving and different ceremonies but do we know a date yet for the funeral? >> reporter: we do there's a number of different events that will take place. good morning to you both, poppy and victor. here insoweto, kind of a representation of where a man lived. you could compare it to ghettos in the states. over my shoulder, you'll see where nelson mandela lived before he was sentenced to life in prison. his home is now turned into a museum, since the end of apartheid and ushering in of diplomacy, some restaurants and bars here. since the announcement of mandela's death, people are

coming here to celebrate. families of all color are showing their children who nelson mandela is. what we know, soweto is so significant, it will be the first location for the official memorial service on tuesday. it will be in fmb stadium. you remember that from the world cup. also, poppy, the lying in state which will take place wednesday, thursday and friday in the capital of the union building where nelson mandela was sworn that as president 20 years ago. government officials saying this morning that they will actually put together a procession, a parade of nelson mandela's body or at least his casket from the mortuary, to the union building, each morning allows as many south africans as possible to say good-bye and pay respect to the former president. what we're seeing now, south africans allowing the news to

sink in. but to truly honor the life, the legacy and the transformative change that nelson mandela was able to bring. >> errol, very quickly, on the right side of the screen, we want to make sure we let people know this is live in johannesburg, outside of nelson mandela's home. you see people crowded there, leaving balloons, flowers, notes, people taking pictures and paying their respects. the funeral separate from the memorial? is that funeral public or private? who do we expect to attend that funeral? >> reporter: well, there are a number of different events, so the wording can change. so tuesday is the memorial service that we'll see at the major stadium here at the everybody. lying in state on wednesday is when we're going to see dignitaries and heads of state from around the world come to south africa and pay their respects. u.s. president barack obama and first lady michelle obama have already said they will be coming to south africa, although the

to seattle. cano and the mariners yesterday reportedly have signed a deal, they've agreed on a ten-year $240 million contract. it's the third richest in history. anl only albert pujols and alex rodriguez have signed a bigger deal. don't feel bad for the yankees, though, they have reportedly reached a deal with outfielder carlos beltran. the yankees. -l pay $345 million over three years for him. not bad. this guy's been with six teams in his 17-year career. in nfl news, the houston texans are looking for a new coach. the team fired gary kubiak on friday. houston lost its 11th straight game thursday night. they lost to jacksonville. they lost to jacksonville twice in the season. gary kubiak's health has been an

issue this season. he suffered a mini stroke on the field last month. and it is a huge day to say the least in college football. several conference championship games will set the stage. the biggest game of the day has got to be ♪ s.e.c. between number 3 auburn and number 5 missouri. the winner of that game will be paying close attention to the scoreboard because they need either florida state or ohio state to lose in order to get in the national championship game. if florida state wins, they're in. if ohio state wins, they're in. but get this, if florida state and ohio state somehow lose, alabama, the team not even playing today could somehow sneak into the national championship game that played the s.e.c. champs. so here we would be again with another s.e.c. game in the national championship. and i think a lot of people are ready for the new age of college football next year when it is a playoffs. we will say good-bye to the bcs after the next couple of weeks and we'll move into a playoff scenario which some say will be

to south and central u.s. four deaths have been blamed on the weather. 200,000 people are out of power and the frigid temperatures are expected to linger through the weekend. now, the governors of tennessee and arkansas have declared states of emergency. number 2, markets cheered a very strong jobs market. the dow soared, amid a high note of 203,000 jobs were added to the payroll in november. the u.s. pay rate fell significantly to 7%. that good news has investors eyeing the federal reserve which may be preparing even more to pull back on the massive stimulus they've been pumping into this economy for years. number 3, the utah doctor convicted of killing his wife has reportedly tried to kill himself. the utah county sheriff's department says martin macneill tries to commit suicide. he used a razor. deputies found him. he's under guard. he could face life in prison

when he's sentenced. that sentencing hearing is on january 7th. number 4, tomorrow, thousands of fans of "fast & furious" star paul walkers expected to attend a memorial for his death from his fiery crash. police say speed may have been a factor in the crash that happened last week. walker's friend who was behind the wheel sadly was also killed. the fifth story now, 85-year-old merrill newman is expected to arrive in san francisco several hours from now. north korea released him friday night after holding him for more than a month. cnn's paula hancocks is there. paula, good morning. did newman team to be okay were he went to beijing? >> well, victor and poppy, he certainly seemed to be in good spirits. he looked clearly relieved, we could see as he was walking through beijing airport and said

he was very good. we understand he was in good health which is why he was allowed on that flight. of course, the question is, why was he leased? it was a very sudden move. of course, north korea made a sudden move when they decided to arrest him back in october. they worked with newman during the korean war. more than 60 years ago. they say he was leading part of an antique communist guerilla group. this was basically carrying out undercover operations in north korea. this could well have been the reason that north korea arrested him in the first place. remember that video they released last weekend where he was apologizing for his actions during the korean war and allegedly killing civilians. it's not clear whether that was a coerced statement. it could well have been. this was likely the reason he was taken in the first place. >> we'll talk more about that paula hancocks in seoul. thank you.

what a man. cities around the world paying tribute to nelson mandela's life and his legacy. >> last night in new york, the lights atop the empire state building, you see them here, blue, red, yellow and green. the colors of the south african flag and the eiffel tower in paris. >> his life was a complicated one. while still in prison in robben island, he wassen the watch list. >> he remained on that watch list until 2008 during the administration of the clintons. he had to get a special waiver because of that. nadia is here with us. you know the mandela family well and known them for some time. but most accounts, most people

in the world think peacemaker when they think nelson mandela. >> let's go back to 1961, nelson mandela together with oliver tamblo they joined the militant wing. at that point, he's involved in what they call some level of terrorist activity where certain installations are bombed. remember, 1962, mandela is arrested. 1964 he is then condemned to the 27 years in prison. to life in prison was the sentence. so it's during that period that he gets more active. in the 1980s, it reached a very high level where there was a bomb at the south african airport. 19 people were killed. and something like 200 were injured. so that's when the organization became what was then known as a terrorist organize. the anc had been fanned anyway.

people like fidel castro in cuba supported mandela. >> when he came out of prison, he spoke very loudly about my friend fidel castro. >> he's been condemned in certain countries for the so-called terrorism. >> here's the video. they embraced. >> mandela then made a plea to clinton in 1996 he said let us lift the sanctions that the u.s. has imposed against cuba. here is what clinton had to say. >> sometimes, he could be very serious and say i just don't understand why you don't lift the embargo. and i said, well, i think we were about to do it before they shot down those planes illegally in the brothers to the rescue tragedy. and then congress removed the right to lift the embargo. and sometimes, had was just joking about it but underneath all of that, there was mandela's fierce loyalty to anybody who had stuck by him personally and

by the anc, the african national congress, his party, during his long 27 years in prison. and castro did. and mandela never forgot it. >> a fiercely loyal man. he embraced yasser arafat, castro. an extraordinarily loyal man those were the people who supported him. what we say right now, to mandela, go well, go carefully, as he enters into the other world. >> the eternity. >> we're going to talk more about this, in many people's minds, he's been casted as global grandfather. we see the images of him dancing and smiling in these bright-colored shirts. i want to know, i want to know about this later snow, what the younger, pre-robben island would

a dramatic chase and a shoot-out. you saw the bullets hit the windshield there. cnn affiliate wbtw reports, police in south carolina released this dash cam video after what ensued after an suv refused to stop for a simple traffic violation. you see that, the car sped off and eventually crashed. the police say the driver and the passenger got out and started shooting at the trooper again who then fired back. authorities took the driver into custody. that passenger ran off but police tracked him down just hours later. and amazingly, no one was injured in that shoot-out. >> wow, that is amazing. renewed hope for the family of a missing new hampshire teen authorities say a letter reportedly sent by this girl, 15-year-old abigail hernandez to her mother. it appears to be real.

authentic. >> hernandez went missing on her way home from school in october. but on friday, officials held a press conference and said the letter underwent expert analysis. >> she is not out there alone, she has somebody either out there helping her, whether that be a friend or what we fear say foe. >> officials won't say what's in the letter but someone they think is holding hernandez against her will. let's get to the tragedy of an american school teacher killed in libya. officials say 33 year ronnie smith was gunned down while jogging in benghazi on thursday. smith moved to libya about a year and a half ago to teach. >> this morning, there are still questions why he was killed. libyan officials are vowing to bring his killer to justice. >> poppy, victor, an american school teacher killed in libya, and so far, no answers about who did it.

>> reporter: 33-year-old ronnie smith was teaching chemistry at an international school in benghazi, libya. >> no matter what happens, i'm good. that gives me peace, and i'm okay with that. >> reporter: libyan authorities say on this street, four assailants in a black jeep opened fire, killing him instantly. in a video of smith and his wife on her way to libya, he speaks openly of his christian faith. >> if there's any single person in the entire universe that you can take a chance on, it's god. >> reporter: smith knew benghazi had grown increasingly dangerous for americans since the attack on the u.s. consulate 15 months ago. ambassador chris stevens and three others were killed. in october, it got riskier, when u.s. special forces in tripoli captured al libi, an operative wanted in connection with attacks at the u.s. embassies in

east african. just after that arrest, smith tweeted libya islamists are threatening kidnappings. days before his killing al qaeda's american spokesman adam gadam. and a similar tweet came before the attack that killed chris stevens before al qaeda's leader ayman al zawahiri. a u.s. official tells cnn there does not appear to be a link between his threats and the killing. at this at this point, they don't believe that al qaeda ordered the attack. the libyan government is still investigating. poppy, victor. >> barbara starr, thank you. also today, today marks 72 years since the attack on pearl harbor in hawaii. back on that date, december 7th,

1941, japanese pilots lit u.s. battleships in pearl harbor. 2700 americans were killed in that attack. usually there's a missing man flyover at pearl harbor, but that's not going to happen this year, you know why? because of budget cuts. >> i'm totally, totally disgusteded. the one day of the year where we're honoring our military from world war ii. >> every year i watch, i have those on camera, and to not see a flyover, i can't imagine. >> obviously very hard for them. the f-22s in the flyover, they're actually going to be in the air for a training mission still not allowed to take part. >> so they'll be up in the air -- >> and not allowed to aabsolute them. talk about a flight. a light you probably would fought want to be on.

history of that event it's been canceled. and also the holiday parade. in fact, in a few days after this, they've been setting up the grandstands in one of the streets in downtown dallas. and those stands just sit there waiting for crews to clean that up again because that parade that was supposed to happen today was also canceled. but this is going to be a day of trying to catch up and get things right. several thousand flights canceled out out of the area throughout the region. in fact, 4,000 people had to sleep at the dfw airport terminal last night. it's a nightmare of ice, sleet and wicked cold. this winter storm has inspired the most haunting descriptions, i icepocalypse. trees are buckling under the sheer weight of the ice, bring down power lines and leaving more than 250,000 homes without

power in dallas-ft. worth. crews are trying to salvage lines that are still working and the roadways are a hazardous mess. >> watch out for the person in front of you and make sure you're ready for the road conditions ahead of you. >> reporter: there have been hundreds of accidents across the region. cars slipping and sliding off roadways. three people in texas and oklahoma killed in weather-related crashes. on this lake, north of dallas, the ice crushed this marina, collapsing the roof ton boats floating underneath. and the winter storm has canceled about 2,000 flights across the region. including about 90% of flights scheduled to depart dallas-ft. worth airport on friday. just two days ago, this same area was basking in the glow of 80-degree weather but it all disappeared in a matter of hours after the sun went down. the polar express arctic blast scooping in leaving layers of ice and crunching sounds of

dancing outside of mandela's home in johannesburg in honor. >> they've left a virtual wall there. thousands and thousands of people are paying anybody tributes. david mckenzie is in johannesburg. the news of his death has sunk in for a couple days now. he was one of the world's most revered leaders. what is the mood like there in johannesburg? >> reporter: well, it's ten days of mourning in south africa. really, the mood is one of celebration. people are gathering together in small and large groups, victor. they're singing old revolutionary songs some from the '80s, some from the '70s. all south africans gathering together outside of his nome johannesburg. nelson mandela died at age 95 after a protracted illness. and i think because of that long illness, people were in some sense prepared for this loss.

so that shock was there, of course, but now, it's just the celebration. singing, dancing, holding up placards with the image on it. bringing flowers it's almost like a pilgrimage to his house in johannesburg, victor. >> there's so many things, david torsion happen before the actual funeral. we know there's a memorial service this week. but we've also gotten word of other events. what can you tell us? >> reporter: well, it's really ten days of celebrating mandela's life. tomorrow there will be a service from all different faith groups celebrating religious ceremonies of life and times of nelson mandela as they're preparing mandela's body to lie in state. he'll lie in state with thousands of south africans or more to view his body. symbolic that he'll be there in pretoria, such a symbol of the

apartheid regime. what i'm hearing time and time again today from people of all races, what a personal impact he had on their lives. many born frees have come here. children and young adults born after the democratic transition here in south africa. even parents very young ones, telling them they want to soak up that madiba clan magic. madiba being his name. >> there have been legislated presidents ewe becky and so forth. has there been any anxiety without mandela's presence, is there anxiety about the future of the country? >> reporter: that's a very good question. i think right are now that anxiety might not be felt because of the sheer emotional

the november jobs report was one of the strongest of the year for the u.s. part of what made it so good was not just the number of jobs added but the types of jobs. >> we're talking about high paying jobs, health care and construction. alexandra field is following that story. what are we looking at just past the number of jobs added? >> right, victor, certainly, those numbers show signs of improvement. one group seems to be benefitting in particular. since the recession hit, young people have struggled to find jobs. last month, more of them started bringing home paychecks. >> well, it's a big relief actually getting a paycheck, instead of work for minimum wage. i mean, i can actually do stuff now. >> reporter: jeff delorenzo graduated from rutgers university with a degree in engineering. he was underemployed for a year serving coffee until he found full-time work in his field at flexline, a manufacturer. >> we figured there was a great potential there an engineering

degree and we grab them. >> reporter: young people like delorenzo and the recently unemployed are reaping the benefits of an economy that's adding jobs. the latest job report puts the unemployment rate at a five-year low of 7%. 203,000 jobs were created in november. and more of them are in higher paying sectors. we saw the predictable retail jobs. in leisure and hospitality, bars and restaurants because of the holidays. but we also saw things like manufacturing, business, professional services again tend to pay a little more money. these are broad-based jobs gains this month and that's important. >> reporter: the november jobs report was better than expected. for a third year in a row, more than 2 million jobs have been created. still, that's not enough to make up for the 9 million jobs lost between 208 and 2009. >> did you think it was going to be difficult finding a job? >> i thought i was going to be handed a job. >> reporter: in the last year,

miles an hour in a 30 miles an hour zone. president obama and other world leaders are expected at the state funeral for nelson mandela next sunday. ten days of mourning are underway following mandela's death on thursday. he was 95 years old. mr. mandela's body is being prepared for his lying in state later this week. on tuesday, there will be an official memorial service in johannesburg. number five, police are searching for four people believed to be behind the killing of an american school teacher. officials say 33-year-old ronnie smith was gunned down while he was jogging in the libyan city of benghazi on thursday. smith moved to libya just about a year and a half ago. he was teaching there. he was planning to return home to his family this month. merrill newman, a veteran of the korean war, 85 years old, is back to see his family today. cnn's paula hancocks in seoul looks at newman's role in the

fire. gun control advocates now have a new target. 3-d printed guns. the house voted to renew a ban on firearms that cannot be picked up by metal detectors. some say the law does not go far enough. they are concerned that plastic 3-d guns which have a removable metal pin can slide past security and airports and schools. congress member steve israel joins us now. congress member, it is good to have you. first question, what is the difference between what has been law since 1988, this undetectible firearms act, which makes it illegal to manufacture, import, sell, shop, deliver, transport or receive by metal detectors and what you are proposing? >> the difference is when we

passed the act in 1988, the notion of a 3-d plastic gun that could go right through a metal detector and on a plane was science fiction. today, it is a reality. they are out there. more are coming. we need to extend that ban. it is not a good idea for us to allow the plastic guns to get through metal detectors on planes and secure environments. as these guns have become a reality, this law is going to expire. it will expire on monday. i led the house of representatives on a bipartisan basis on extending the law. it passed the house of representatives. now the senate has to act very early next week or else the law expires and it is terminated and america is a more dangerous place. >> quickly, do you think there will be a hold up in the senate? >> i hope not. we have to extend the ban and modernize it to require every single firearm have one metal or

there is a state of emergency declared where you are, right? >> reporter: it looks like they dodged a bullet in memphis. you can see a tiny bit of ice on the grouped here west of us in west memphis. a half inch of freezing rain. they had some conditions where they had about 5,000 people without power. today down to 500. that is the good news here. things look like they are getting back to normal. the problem is people left in the cold this morning are dealing with temperatures below freezing. when you add in the wind chill in memphis, it feels like 9 degrees. you may see some of the runners go by. they canceled the marathon. 20,000 people were expected to be in the city of memphis running the marathon for st. jude. they are running anyway. it looks like things are moving in and out on flights. to the north in jonesboro and

port smith is where they saw a good inch of ice. we all know out toward dallas where they got devastated by ice. a good inch of ice gave about 200,000 people without power. in the airport, people were stranded. they were entertaining them in the airport. 4,000 people stuck in the terminals. the story now is the second wave. we have been talking about this. there still is concern here. even if you did not get to the threshold of half an inch of ice, there is another chance of ice coming this afternoon. you can take that amount and you got .25 inch, you add another .25 inch and you are concerned about losing power with the next wave. we are on standby for the next wave and motion. >> that second punch is more than an annoyance. indra petersons, thank you so much. let's go to jennifer gray in

the weather center. >> where is the storm headed next? >> it will head up the east coast. the first wave like indra was talking about has hit. she was talking about dallas. we have video of a car that was just fished from the icy conditions. it was just flipped back over. this is just one of many situations that have been exactly like this that have gone on over the past couple of days. very icy. we are not seeing the sleet and ice anymore, but it is still on the ground. that is where we are seeing the big trouble. te temperatures are not going to get above freezing the next couple of days. the second wave is coming. it will be in the mid-atlantic by later tonight and into tomorrow. mainly sunday into monday, though. we are looking at more ice and snow. it looks like this will be farther to the east. most of the areas who have already seen ice should be in

the clear. there still is that slight chance for areas to pick up a little bit more especially in tennessee and western kentucky. we could see up to .50 inch of ice in washington, d.c. and that will pull into northeast sunday into monday. that is another storm that we are going to be watching. we have winter storm watches and warnings in effect. ice storm warnings in effect. all of the above. temperatures are very cold across the south, east. look at the temperatures in the north. temperatures are 41 degrees below zero in minot. 35 degrees below zero in fargo. chicago at zero. these are the wind chill factors. this is when you factor the wind chill and the temperatures. very chilly. even the south seeing temperatures 30 degrees below normal for today. this will stick around for the next couple of days.

thank you for being here. >> thank you. it's a pleasure. >> you knew mandela before he went to prison and you knew him after. i want to hear from you as we show some of your beautiful photos how you think prison changed him. >> i think the first time i photographed mr. nelson mandela was 1951. we met during an anc conference in december of 1951 in a place called bloomfordking. this was a hotbed of movement of the apartheid movement. there was a lot of tension at this particular conference because people and move the representatives working at the conference were terribly nervous. except mr. mandela. i find him outstanding. being terribly cool and relaxed.

that's the first time i met him. again, i met mr. mandela in his office, in his law office in johannesburg in 1952 where he posed for me for a photograph in front of his desk. again, i found i had this impression of him being a very relaxed and self controlled person. >> i want to go back to the first picture we showed. i understand it is your favorite. it is of mandela in his cell on robben island in 1994. voted one of the most memorable images of the 20th century. give us insight into this moment. if you spoke with him or what he was thinking at that moment. >> it is very difficult for me to know what he was thinking. i imagine that at that time, he

had spent 17 years in this cell. i asked him if he would stand against the window and look out through the bars. he did that for me. i photographed a number of pictures of him standing looking out. there was a moment of total quietness and it was a very thoughtful moment. i noticed the different frames i shot as the expressions changed from being very sad and relaxing. when i was finished, i asked him, i said to him, thank you very much. he turned around and he gave me a little smile. it was a smile which i also managed to photograph eventually. a smile of being totally relaxed. having passed through his 17

years within a few seconds. >> i would also -- it is a stunning photo. i believe, correct me if i'm wrong, this is one of the 50 most significant photos of the 20th century. certainly what an image. you also spent a new year's eve with nelson mandela after he got out of prison. you talk about his sense of humor. tell us about that side of him. >> yes, he always made jokes. he always was terribly amusing after he managed to give his talks and speeches. in 1990, new year's eve, he invited me and my wife to the new year's eve party where there were a number of former robben island prisoners, including bishop tutu.

a very solid november jobs report is helping push forward a strong economic recovery. not everyone is feeling it, but good for the folks who are. we saw big gains in higher paying jobs like manufacturing and construction and health care. those are the job gains we like to see rather than the gains in the retail sector and food industry, lower paying jobs. we saw gains in both in the report. the long-term unemployment rate is high. about 4 million americans out of work for four months or longer. the longer out of work, the harder it is to find a job. new this morning, a revolutionary procedure being used to treat cancer patients is
